Tire Storage for Changeover Tires
The tread and sidewall of tires are compounded to resist deterioration caused by sunlight and ozone. Nevertheless, stored tires should be protected against these and other potentially damaging conditions. We provide this bulletin for your consideration if you should choose to store your tires at home or at a storage facility.
Storing Unmounted Tires
Store Tire:
- Where area is clean, cool, dry, dark and well ventilated but with a minimum of circulating air.
- So that tire on bottom retains its shape and is not crushed with weighted objects.
- So that whitewalls are facing each other to avoid staining.
- Protected by an opaque waterproof covering, if outdoors, but avoid creating a heat box or steam bath.
- Where tires are raised off the storage surface, especially if outdoors.
Don't Store Tires:
- Where area is wet, oily or greasy (such as with gasoline or petroleum-based products).
- Where area is subject to extreme temperatures or direct exposure to sunlight.
- In the same area as an electric motor or other ozone generating sources.
- On black asphalt or other heat absorbent surfaces.
- Adjacent to highly reflective surfaces (i.e. sand or snow covered surfaces).
- On piers, boat decks or other open unprotected areas.
If storing vehicle for winter and it cannot be 'blocked' up, keep tires inflated to recommended operating inflation pressure. Move vehicle every three months to prevent ozone cracking in the bulge area and to prevent a flat spot from developing.
At Superior Tire & Auto Centres, we would be pleased to store your tires if it is more convenient for you. In addition to providing proper storage, we will inspect them to be sure they are clean and free from foreign objects, review any suspect areas, and ensure their readiness for your later use.
